Craniosacral Therapy Calms and Heals Both Body and Mind
The spinal cord is the mainframe of our central nervous systems, and any restriction along the cord can result in a wide range of serious problems, ranging from structural misalignment to pain and inhibited organ function. Craniosacral Therapy removes restrictions around the spinal cord and brain stem, releasing stiffness and rigidity to allow the nerves that run through our muscles and connective tissue to fully relax.
Craniosacral Therapy (also sometimes called cranial sacral therapy, cranial therapy, or CST) removes these restrictions by working with the flow of the cerebral spinal fluid. Like an ocean, this fluid is in constant motion, moving between the cranium and the tailbone in a wavelike pattern. Periodically, this wave pauses and there is no action across the spinal cord for a few seconds or minutes. This causes the brainwave patterns to shift from high beta waves (which is an anxiety state) to theta waves (which is deep relaxation).
This powerful pause is what is known as “the still point.”
Craniosacral Therapy helps put the nervous system into this "still point" state so the entire mind and body can deeply relax, unkink, and reboot, leaving the individual in a profound state of calm.
Craniosacral Therapy Offers Relief for Stress, Pain, Trauma, And Related Issues
- Neck, jaw and shoulder pain
- Chronic lower back pain
- Headaches and migraines
- Insomnia and sleep difficulties
- Trauma and PTSD
- Post Concussive Syndrome
- TMJ (temporomandibular joint) issues
Chronic pain alters brain function, mood, personality, and energy levels. And over the long term, chronic pain leads to memory loss, decreased cognitive function and accelerates aging.
By removing restrictions around the spinal cord and inducing a still point in the nervous system, craniosacral therapy releases pain in the muscles and relieves stress and tension in the body and mind.
Our complex, fast-paced world leaves most of us with nervous systems set in fight or flight mode. Many of us routinely function with high levels of anxiety in our lives. This kind of stress has been recognized by the medical community as a link to both physical and mental disease.
Craniosacral Therapy acts as a reset button that releases tension in the muscles and relieves our bodies and minds of the stress we constantly carry.
MORE HEALTHFUL DENTISTRY
The alignment of the palate and the cranial bones has a great impact on the teeth and, thus, on the alignment of the jaw. Dentists work with craniosacral therapists to relax tension in the upper palate, the soft palate, and the temporal mandibular joint after dental procedures.
TMJ Specialists also work with CST Therapists to align the temporal mandibular joint as this joint is the linchpin for maintaining structural alignment for the entire body. This can relieve years' worth of pain, stress, and tension in the jaw, head, face, and entire body.
THERAPY FOR PREGNANCY
Craniosacral therapy assists a pregnant woman's journey into mothering by releasing restrictions in the body and pelvis to co-create an optimal birthing experience. During pregnancy, one of the primary focuses is to release restrictions in the pelvis to resolve pain and tension in the back and hips. This helps prepare for an healthy labor and birth, including promoting optimal fetal positioning.
TRAUMA AND POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER
Craniosacral therapy quiets the adrenal system by shutting down the fight or flight response. Individuals with Post-Traumatic Stress who receive regular CST sessions report feeling less reactivity, less disrupted sleep, and a greater sense of calm.
INFANTS AND CHILDREN
CST is a wonderful and gentle bodywork for infants, babies and children.
Babies who receive CST right at birth bring all systems into balance before problems take form. Treated babies can immediately experience fewer sleep disturbances, colic, ear infections, digestion issues, and emotional/mood disturbances.
If your child suffers from headaches, earaches, neck and back pain, irritability, frequent digestive difficulties, upper respiratory infections or allergies, CST is a safe and non-invasive form of treatment.
HEAD INJURIES AND POST-CONCUSSIVE SYNDROME
The cranium is not one bone, but rather many bones that fit together like puzzle pieces. The brain inside the cranium is supported by fibrous structures. When an individual suffers a head injury or concussion, these bones and supportive structures can be forced out of alignment, which causes pain, headaches, memory loss, cognitive dysfunction, and visual and auditory distortions. Craniosacral therapy is very effective in addressing and alleviating these symptoms.
